This method goes far beyond sharpening

Sharpening deep sky images in particular is highly complex. The finest details must be emphasized without increasing the image noise. Many sharpening methods over-sharpen the subject, creating hard edges and artifacts. The successful astrophotographer Christoph Kaltseis has developed APF-R in order to achieve high-resolution, ultra-sharp images that still look natural. APF-R stands for Absolute Point of Focus. With this innovative method, the different detail levels are worked out of the image layer by layer. This way, your photos will not only be sharper, but also gain depth. The experts from NASA and ESA from the Hubble Space Telescope team have already been using APF-R for several years, for the amazing images of the space telescope. But it is not only there that the method regularly proves its efficiency, the multiple awards of Christoph Kaltseis' photos as "Astronomy Picture of the Day" also prove the superiority of APF-R.

I gave APF-R a go on a HST mosaic and it works around 30% better fine tuned than our other techniques to sharpen mid-tone to shadows, which might not sounds too much but in contrary is a big leap.

A plugin that meets the highest standards

The Photoshop plugin that we created in collaboration with Christoph, make his brilliant but complex method available to everyone with just one click. Instead of performing the up to 50 steps manually in Photoshop and calculating radii with the calculator again and again, the plugin automatically generates the first result after a few seconds. Even comparing different layer configurations, which Christoph has established over the years, is done at the push of a button. Of course, the non-destructive workflow still allows you to access all layers of the APF-R method afterwards. Whether you're a novice or a pro, the plugin simplifies the entire APF-R process so much that you'll quickly achieve success and get out even the finest details from your images.

APF-R - Absolute Point of Focus

Christoph Kaltseis has been involved in astrophotography since his childhood. As an award-winning Photoshop expert, he has spent years researching methods in Photoshop to bring out even the most inconspicuous details in his images. APF-R is not a secret. If you want to apply it to your photos without the APF-R plugin, you can find the most important steps in this video. But you will soon find out that applying APF-R manually is very time-consuming and you’ll end up with countless nested layers and you will often have to change several settings at the same time in order to compare results. That's why most people have only used the process on very few images so far. Due to the easy and fast use of the plugin, it is now possible for amateurs and for professionals to apply the APF-R method to almost any image.
